In the menu bar

Everything in the toolkit

Fifteen focused tools in a single menu bar drop-down β€” no bloat, no upsells.

Memory purge

Reclaim used RAM in one click. Optional auto-purge watches free memory and acts on its own once it drops below your threshold.

Cache & log cleanup

Clears user cache, logs older than 3 days, and .DS_Store files β€” safely, with no administrator elevation required.

Empty Trash

Empties your Trash in one click, exactly as if you'd done it by hand β€” just faster.

Flush DNS

Clears the DNS cache when sites won't load or your network isn't behaving as expected.

Spotlight reindex

Forces a fresh reindex of your disk when Spotlight search starts returning stale or missing results.

Time Machine cleanup

Trims local APFS Time Machine snapshots via the native tmutil command, reclaiming real gigabytes on disk.

Live dashboard

Disk, RAM, battery and CPU at a glance in the menu bar, with sparkline history and a list of top memory consumers.

Restart system services

Finder, Dock and SystemUIServer sometimes balloon β€” restart them in one click, no logout required (WindowServer deliberately excluded).

Old iOS backups

Lists MobileSync backups with size and date β€” you decide what to remove, always via Trash, never a hard delete.

Clipboard history

Copy twice within a second and a history bar slides up β€” click any card to paste it again. Off by default, and it never reads what your password manager marks as concealed.

Guided disk scan

Breaks down caches, old downloads, dev tool junk and large files by size, pre-checking what's safe to remove. Nothing is deleted without your say β€” and always via the Trash.

Health alerts

Notifies you if the Mac overheats or a single app hogs RAM or CPU. Purely observational, with a cooldown so it never spams the same warning twice.

Frozen app detection

Spots apps that stopped responding and adds a one-click Force Quit β€” no more guessing which window locked up.

Fan speed

Live RPM for every fan, read straight from the sensors. Skipped entirely on fanless Macs instead of faking a zero.

Network throughput

Live upload and download speed on the dashboard, computed locally β€” no packet inspection, nothing sent anywhere.

Antivirus scan

Scans apps, downloads and login items against a local threat-pattern database β€” entirely on your Mac, nothing uploaded anywhere.

Anti-spyware sweep

Flags malicious browser extensions and rogue configuration profiles installed without your knowledge.

Anti-malware cleanup

Finds adware and other unwanted software hiding in LaunchAgents and LaunchDaemons, then removes it in one click.

How it works

Three steps. Then it runs itself.

Set it up once and DrMaco stays out of your way.

01

Install

One Homebrew command, or build from source. No account, no sign-up, nothing to configure first.

02

Authorise once

Approve the helper a single time. It exposes exactly two operations β€” nothing else can run as root.

03

Forget it

Set a free-RAM threshold and DrMaco handles the rest, posting a notification whenever it acts.

Menu bar dashboard

Every key metric, always in view

Click the menu bar icon and see your Mac's state without opening Activity Monitor. A smooth, modern flat-design interface β€” no frosted glass, no heavy shadows.

  • Disk, RAM, battery (% + time), CPU + thermal state
  • Sparkline history for every metric
  • Top RAM-consuming processes, visible before you purge

Click a card to copy it again

Clipboard history

Copy twice. A history bar appears.

No hotkey to learn β€” copy the same way you always do, just twice within a second, and a frosted card bar slides up above the Dock. Click a card to paste it again, hover to keep it open, pin it so it stays.

  • Up to 50 entries, stored locally, never uploaded
  • Skips anything your password manager marks as concealed
  • Off by default β€” one toggle in Settings turns it on

Automation without repeated prompts

Memory autopilot β€” without asking for your password every time

Turn on auto-purge once β€” a small, dedicated helper (DrMacoHelper) installs with a single admin confirmation. From then on, every automatic purge goes over XPC, with no further prompts.

  • The daemon exposes only two narrowly defined operations
  • Every automatic purge posts a system notification
  • No hidden "run anything as root" permissions, ever

Security

No vague permissions, ever

Every privileged call is narrow, named, and scoped to one exact task. Nothing runs an arbitrary command as an administrator β€” ever.

Real-time protection

Scanning quietly, the whole time you work

A lightweight scan runs in the background, checking new downloads, browser extensions and startup items against a local threat database the moment they appear. No cloud lookups β€” nothing ever leaves your Mac.

  • Every new download and login item checked automatically
  • Threat database ships and updates with the app itself
  • Zero network calls β€” detection runs entirely on-device

Why pay for something that should be free?

Most paid "cleaners" charge a monthly fee for commands macOS already ships. DrMaco does the same job β€” without asking you to sign up for another subscription.

Feature Typical paid "cleaners" DrMaco
Price Recurring subscription Free, always
Getting started Account, sign-up, trial No account, one command
Telemetry / ads Often present None
Admin privileges Broad, unclear scope Narrow, explicitly documented
Footprint Heavy (often Electron) Native Swift + SwiftUI
Malware scanning Often a separate paid add-on Included, on-device
Principles

Four rules we don't break

How the project stays worth trusting.

Least privilege

Elevated calls are named and validated β€” never a blank cheque to root.

0

No telemetry

No analytics, no phone-home. The app talks to no server of ours.

~8 MB

Native and small

Swift and SwiftUI. No Electron, no dependency tree to audit.

Actively maintained

New features and fixes ship regularly β€” see the full history in the changelog.

Privacy

What it does β€” and never does

The whole contract, in plain terms. Verify any line of it in the source.

What it does
  • Runs Apple's own maintenance commands on request
  • Reads system metrics locally to draw the dashboard
  • Moves files you select to the Trash, never a hard delete
  • Notifies you every time auto-purge fires
  • Checks files and login items against a local threat database
What it never does
  • Collect analytics, usage data or crash telemetry
  • Contact any server operated by us
  • Request a generic run-anything-as-root privilege
  • Bundle ads, upsells or a paid tier
  • Upload a single scanned file or its hash to any server

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Is DrMaco really free?+

Yes β€” this Lite version is free forever, with no paid tier, paywall, or trial. Supporting the author is entirely optional.

Is it safe to grant administrator privileges?+

Every elevated call is narrow and named β€” purgeMemory, reindexVolume. Never an arbitrary shell command, and never broader than the one task it's built for.

Why does macOS warn about an "unidentified developer"?+

Notarization requires a paid Apple Developer membership this project doesn't use yet. Right-click β†’ Open once and macOS remembers your choice.

Which macOS versions are supported?+

macOS Ventura (13) and later, natively on Apple Silicon.

Can I report a bug or request a feature?+

Reach out through the contact page β€” every report goes straight to the person building it.

Will there be a paid version?+

We're planning a Pro version with advanced features down the line. This Lite version β€” everything you can download today β€” stays free forever, no bait and switch.

Does the antivirus scan upload my files anywhere?+

No. Detection runs entirely on-device against a local threat database β€” nothing is uploaded, hashed to a server, or sent anywhere. It's the same zero-telemetry rule the rest of the app follows.

Ready for a cleaner, faster Mac?

No account. No subscription. One minute to install.

Always free β€” no strings attached

Before you download...

DrMaco is, and always will be, 100% free β€” no paywall, no trial, no catch. It's built and maintained solo, in spare time. If it's useful to you, a coffee helps keep it going.
